‘Bonjour Ostende’ in the Venetiaanse Gaanderijen

Some names of cities incite dreams. Some places receive an extraordinary status attached to them by their fame. Ostend is just such a place. The city with its sea, beaches, harbours, promenade and architecture became a source of inspiration for many artists. Ostend is the subject of poetry, novels, stories, theatre pieces, films, operas and comic strips. Ostend was also, and primarily, painted, drawn or engraved many times by well-known and lesser well-known artists from Belgium and abroad.

In the exhibition, ‘Bonjour Ostende' in the Venetiaanse Gaanderijen, Curator Xavier Tricot provides a chronological overview of Ostend in international art, with works from the 18th up to and including the 21st Century. Artists such as James Ensor, Léon Spilliaert, Constant Permeke and Jan De Clerck are present in the exhibition. From Ensor, 11 works are presented and various works of art from other artists refer to the Ostend painter.

Attention is also given to intnernational art with paintings by William Turner, Erich Heckel, Edouard Pignon, Leo Gestel, Felix Nussbaum and Heinrich Campendonck. But, contemporary art also receives a place with paintings by Iannis Kounellis, Roger Raveel and Thierry De Cordier, as well as videos and photographs by Lili Dujourie, Maurice Antony and films by Henri Storck.

‘Bonjour Ostende' runs from 15 June until and including 15 September 2013
