This painting brings the identification with Christ again into the ensemble. The Man of Sorrows belongs to the Christian iconography as a representative figure. Ensor identified himself here primarily with the horrific aspect of the suffering unto death, and from there the blending together of the Japanese No masks of the drama with traditional attributes of the Man of Sorrows: a crown of thorns on the head and the dripping blood.
